Why Does a Side-Mounted Spring Fail to Isolate Vibration?

Upload time:2025-06-04 Publisher:安立静

Application Overview

Scene diagram

A 7 kg camera was mounted on a side bracket. To reduce vibration transmitted from a steel wall structure to the camera, the customer installed four springs. However, instead of reducing vibration, the springs amplified it and eventually caused structural damage. A more effective vibration isolation solution was urgently required.

Root Cause Analysis

It is important to understand that a spring alone does not inherently provide effective vibration isolation in this application.

The purpose of the mounting system is to minimize vibration transmission from the supporting steel wall to the camera, thereby maintaining image stability and clarity. Although the spring can absorb vibration energy through elastic deformation, a steel spring has an extremely low damping ratio—typically around 0.005.

As vibration energy excites the spring, the stored energy is rapidly released, causing prolonged oscillation and resonance. This harmonic motion can amplify vibration levels and, over time, lead to structural fatigue and damage to sensitive equipment such as cameras.

For suspended or side-mounted systems, an effective vibration isolator must provide both:

  • Elastic compliance for vibration isolation

  • High damping characteristics for energy dissipation

Only by combining these two properties can vibration transmission be effectively reduced and equipment stability maintained.

Recommended Solution

Anlijing Vibration Isolation Technology Co., Ltd. recommends the use of a wire rope isolator.

Each wire rope element consists of high-strength stainless steel cables constructed from 7×19 stranded wires. During vibration, microscopic relative motion and friction occur between individual strands, creating inherent damping that efficiently dissipates vibration and shock energy.

Compared with conventional steel springs, wire rope isolators provide:

  • Superior damping performance

  • Excellent shock absorption capability

  • Long service life

  • Corrosion resistance

  • Maintenance-free operation

  • Reliable performance in harsh environments
